Still Writing

Hello everyone! I have been quiet... perhaps too quiet... but anyway. I am now writing chapter three of the new novel that I started since the conference. Yes, I took my 'precious' novel that I had been working on for years and years, and PUT IT AWAY...

It has been so hard, but already I can see the benefits. I'm not so attached to this new story, so it's a lot easier to just sit down and write it. I've gotten great reactions from the people who've read it so far, too, which always helps. I think that, since I only have a loose storyline to work from, it's coming so much more naturally and easily. I have a deadline with myself of October before I turn it over to Carol for review, and hopefully send it off to an agent or something. Gotta get it finished! But for once, I actually feel that it's possible. It's totally doable.

And you know, even though I'm working on this other story (actually writing almost every day - gasp!), I'm still getting new and better ideas for the story that I put away. I'm getting very excited to work on it again later. I think it will be so much better this time.

What about you guys? Did any of you put your multi-draft novels away and started something new? How is that going for you?

Oh, absolutely! I love this! The best part is, as excited as I am about my new book, I am not emotionally attached to it. It is not like a fussy, spoiled child that I simper over and preen for hours on end, and then get pouty about if someone doesn't think its the greatest thing ever written. No, this new book is a creative work I can be objective about. And if no one wants it, hey, I'll just write something else!

My old book is in a box in the garage. As soon as I finish my new book I'm going back to re-write the old one using a fresh point of view. I've already tried writing a few pages in the new voice and my daughter has been demanding that I write the rest. She will have to wait, but not very long.

I am astounded by how quick I can draft new material if I don't fuss over what's already there! I have never tried to write a book from page one to the end without stopping to revise, and I really like it!

Hooray for WIFYR!

So what is your new book about?

So glad to hear that it's going so well for you! Hurray! We've learned so much. :) Keep up the pace!

My new novel is about a girl who is terrified of the ocean and somehow finds herself in the company of a mermaid. This explains so little, but to be honest, I am not entirely sure where the book is going!

Yes, yes, I remember now! We talked about it in the hall that afternoon.

Well, keep writing, even if you don't know where you're going. I always like to say, by the time you get there you will long have known where you were going to go.
